This research project is looking at the nutritional value and eating quality of beef, lamb and milk raised from animals kept on semi-natural habitats, such as heather moorland, saltmarsh and species-rich grasslands. Initial results indicate that lamb raised on saltmarsh or heather moor is superior in both nutritional quality, taste and shelf-life, compared to lamb from intensively managed grasslands. See also Eating Biodiversity - 2009 briefing paper produced for the Arthur Rank Centre and the official ESRC press release.

Gail Vines, Forum for the Future website
A research paper by University of Surrey, considering the role of livestock in maintaining biodiverse landscapes and a sustainably farmed landscape. Food for thought.

This was a partnership project to promote the conservation grazing of high quality grasslands and other habitats in the limestone country of Yorkshire, coupled with promoting production of quality beef and lamb. See 'lamb' and 'beef' for further details of producers.
