There is a small budget to assist with practical restoration work on privately-owned grasslands in Wales for 2008 and 2009. Landowners interested in accessing some of this funding should provide details of the proposed work and a make good case for receiving grant. This support is also available to owners of unregistered land who are not in an agri-environment agreement. Funding for deserving restoration projects has been provided by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
Support for sustainable grazing of high quality grasslands
PONT may also be able to provide help with capital works (such as fencing to enable the reintroduction of grazing on small, unregistered holdings). Please contact pont@grazinganimalsproject.org.uk for advice.
Agri-environment schemes (registered agricultural holdings only)
Payments are available to support the maintenance and restoration of Wild Meadow habitats on registered agricultural holdings via the Tir Gofal agri-environment scheme (Wales) and the Higher Level Stewardship Scheme (England). Wild Meadows also contribute to a holding's points score under the lower-level schemes (Tir Cynnal and Entry-level Stewardship). Please contact your local Welsh Assembly Government or Natural England office for details.
Local schemes
There may be Special Projects happening in your area, that offer practical support for restoring Wild Meadow habitats, such as in the National Parks. Check out the Local Action section of the website to find out what's going on near you.
Community projects
All local authorities have a small grants scheme for deserving causes, such as creating Wild Meadow areas in school grounds, restoring wild flower meadows to village greens or collecting local wild flower seed to propagate for small projects. Check out your local authority's website, or give them a call to find out details. Some of the larger parish and town councils may also have a small grants scheme for community projects. Grants are usually made once a year and there will be a standard application window. A costed proposal and timetable for your project will need to be produced prior to applying for funding, as well as details of who will undertake the work and how you will measure the outcome of your project.
